Mission Field

Mission Fields

The church is BIG on missions and missionaries "in the field". Obviously many people picture the "missions" of the church taking place in the darkest regions of a 3rd World Nation accessible only by elephant, donkey, camel or dugout canoe. Natives ravaged by illness, famine fostered by draught and running around naked. All the Missionaries that came to my church when I was a child brought slide shows of these people and situations.

However, today people are understanding the "mission field" differently. My closest friend in seminary oldest daughter is on a mission trip in Italy. The emails we get detail much of the fun she is having touring the country side. She also is doing mission work, really. :) My ministry started with Youth For Christ in Central Nebraska. Now I know what you are thinking, Nebraska is a mission field unto itself. The ranchers, cowboys, tumbleweed, miles of corn, Indians, ya da, ya da, ya da. Not only was the mission field in Nebraska but it was ministering to . . . . . . . . teenagers.

Now that's a mission field! !

Yep, missions can be found at home, in our country, our state and even in town. We have the People's City Mission for the homeless and needy of the area. The mission of Christ is anywhere His presence is needed and the means "to be all tings to all people" encouraged.

I am planning to go on a mission trip myself. Most of you know I am an avid motorcycle rider. The opportunity has opened for me to be part of an "Aid Station" as part of my denomination's mission to bikers attending the Sturgis Rally in South Dakota. The station is in Deadwood, SD where Wild Bill Hickok was killed, Calamity Jane is buried and home of the worst Wax Museum I ever visited.

What will be in store for me as we render aid to bikers and all people who are in need? Who really knows and I don't really care. God is in control.

With the declining economy and rising fuel prices this will be a bare necessity trip. It will entail gas money, minimal souvenir bucks and camping in the darkest remote areas away from civilization. Europe on $40 a day looks better all the time.

In the event I don't show up where and when I am supposed, here is my travle route.
