Immigration - What Do Americans Think?

The State of American Public Opinion on Immigration in Spring 2006

A Review of Major Surveys the American public has generally consistent views on the flow of immigrants and the major policy options under debate. The polls do not suggest major shifts in public opinion over the spring as a result of either the immigrant marches or the policy debate with one important exception: The share of Americans who see immigration as a major problem has been increasing rapidly, and the growing concern is especially notable among Republicans.

Some of the other major findings include:
• The public appears almost evenly divided on whether immigration overall is good for the country or not.
• Americans are split over levels of legal immigration. Significant minorities of roughly a third or more favor the opposite approaches of keeping legal immigration at its present levels or decreasing it. A smaller share favors increasing legal immigration.
• A significant majority of Americans see illegal immigration as a very serious problem and most others see it at least as a serious problem.
• A majority of Americans believes that illegal immigrants are taking jobs Americans do not want.
• A majority of Americans appears to favor measures that would allow illegal immigrants currently in the U.S. to remain in the country either as permanent residents and eventual citizens or as temporary workers who will have to go home eventually. When those options are presented, only a minority favors deporting all illegal migrants or otherwise forcing them to go home.
• Americans generally express greater confidence in Democrats on immigration issues than Republicans.
• A majority of Americans disapprove of the way that President Bush is handling immigration issues.

What do you think?

The Bus Driver

It's been many years since I have had to stand by the railroad tracks at Alfalfa Center, waiting for the school bus, and yet I remember one special day clearly.

It was the Spring of 1963, and I was attending fourth grade at Whittier elementary school. Every morning my mom would pack up a bagged lunch for me, usually a meat and cheese sandwich, crackers, raw vegetables with an apple for dessert.

On this particular day when I reached the corner, I set my lunch down on the ground in order to shift my school books to a more comfortable position in my arms (these were pre-backpack times!) By the time the school bus lurched to a halt before me, I had forgotten all about my lunch and stepped aboard, leaving my brown bag behind.

By the time I realized my lunch was missing, we were already pulling in to the school parking lot. I started to cry. The bus driver, whose name I have since forgotten, asked me, "What's wrong?"

I spilled my story about having left my lunch back at the bus stop. He patted me on the shoulder and said, "Don't you worry about a thing." I wiped my tears with the back of my hand, and looked at him doubtfully. After all, what could he do? The school bell started to jangle and I hurried on to class.

I was involved in coloring in a carnival picture I had drawn -- when the school secretary arrived at the door of our classroom. She handed the teacher something in a small brown paper sack.

After the secretary departed, the teacher walked over to me carrying the sack. With a note of surprise, she said, "This is for you from the bus driver!" It was not the same bag my mother had sent me off to school with. It was just about time for lunch, and I could not wait to look inside.

To this day, I still remember the wonders that lay inside that
special package: a deviled ham salad sandwich, an orange, and two chocolate chip cookies. At the time, I didn't put two and two together, but later I realized the driver had given me his own

Another Blame Game

I recently received this from a 'conservative' friend via email. While it is accurate in content from what I know, it bothers me in a different way. Seems all I receive is pro-Republican and anti-Democrat mailings. It would be nice to hear from the other 'side' and present their views. After all, I do not for a moment believe Republicans are necessarily correct nor are they the saviors of the USA. I do believe in a balance of life.
******* *******
There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq during the month of January.....
In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the month of January. That's just one American city, about as deadly as the entire war torn country of Iraq.

When some claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war, state the following ...

FDR... led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.

Truman... finished that war and started one in Korea, North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,334 per year.

John F. Kennedy... started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us.

Johnson... turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average of 5,800 per year.

Clinton... went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent. Bosnia never attacked us. e was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.

In the two years since terrorists attacked us President Bush has ... liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.

The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but... It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51 day operation.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.

It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida!!!!

Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB! The Military moral is high!

The biased media hopes we are too ignorant to realize the facts.

Who's Responsible?

Hope you will read this and thinkabout it. Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised

1.) That participation in the Program would be completely voluntary,
2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 oftheir annual incomes into the Program,
3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would bedeductible from their income for tax purposes each year,
4.) That the money the participants put into the independent "Trust Fund"rather than into the General operating fund, and therefore, would only be used tofund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program, and,
5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.

Since many have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving aSocial Security check every month -- and then finding they are getting taxed on 85% of the money paid to the Federal government to "put away," you may beinterested in the following questions.

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent "Trust"fund and put it into the General fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate.------------

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for SocialSecurity (FICA) withholding?
A: The Democratic Party.--------------------

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the "tie-breaking" deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the U.S.-------------------

Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants? AND MY FAVORITE
A: That's right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants movedinto this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! TheDemocratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!

Then, after doing all this lying and thieving and violation of the originalcontract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is, uninformed citizens believe it!
